Real Sociedad secured the 2025 Copa del Rey title after a thrilling 4-2 victory on penalties against Atlético Madrid, following a dramatic 2-2 draw after extra time at La Cartuja Stadium on Saturday evening.
The match delivered high intensity from the start, with Real Sociedad taking the lead in the 16th second through Barinetchia. Atlético responded later, as Nigerian winger Ademola Lookman leveled the score 17 minutes later with a strike from inside the box.
Just before halftime, captain Mikel Oyarzabal restored Sociedad’s advantage, converting a penalty in the 45th minute to make it 2-1.
Atlético Madrid pushed hard in the second half and eventually found the equalizer in the 83rd minute through Álvarez, sending the match into extra time. With no further goals scored, the final was decided by a penalty shootout.
Real Sociedad were the best, winning 4-2 in the shootout to lift the trophy.
This victory marks Real Sociedad’s fourth Copa del Rey title in their history, and their first since 2020. Notably, it also mirrors their 1986-87 triumph—coincidentally against Atlético Madrid as well—when they won under identical circumstances after a 2-2 draw and a 4-2 penalty shootout victory.
