Al Hilal coach targets historic Rwanda and Sudan league double

Al Hilal Omdurman head coach Laurentiu Reghecampf has established an ambitious objective of extending his club’s current dominance from the Rwanda Premier League (RPL) into Sudan’s Elite League.

The Romanian strategist stated that Al Hilal Omdurman intends to secure the RPL championship before shifting their full concentration toward clinching the Sudanese Elite League title.

The coach revealed these intentions following a crucial 2-1 away victory over Rayon Sports on Saturday, a result that moved them six points clear of second-placed APR FC with an additional game in hand.

Ernest Luzolo and El Hadji Kane found the net for the visiting side during the opening half, before Uwiyaremye Fidali managed to pull back a consolation goal for the hosts after the interval.

This defeat relegated Kiyovu Sports further down the standings into fifth position, now trailing the Sudanese giants by a significant 16-point margin.

In a post-match interview, Reghecampf detailed the reasons behind his tactical adjustments against Kiyovu Sports, the side that had previously defeated them during the first round of fixtures.

“I am satisfied with our performance. Perhaps not across the [entirety] of the match, but particularly toward the closing stages. I am pleased that the players maintained their pressing throughout the game and invested a tremendous amount of physical effort,” the coach remarked.

“We modified our tactics slightly because we suffered a loss against them in the first leg. We are well aware that they pose a serious threat on the counter-attack, which is precisely why we sought to implement those changes.”

Reghecampf: ‘We Are the Best Team by Far’

The manager further outlined his vision of ensuring Al Hilal captures domestic league titles in both Rwanda and Sudan, confidently asserting that his squad remains the superior side by a considerable distance.

“I have told you this from the start—there is no need to ask me repeatedly. We are the best team, truly! We are far ahead. It happens that we occasionally squander opportunities, but no opponent presents us with real problems when we are performing at 100 percent.”

“Currently, we possess a deep roster of players. We have the luxury of rotating the squad. For me, it is not a matter of a ‘first team’ or a ‘second team.’ Our goal is to win the league here, and we intend to win the league in Sudan as well.”

Regarding the Sudan Elite League Ambitions

Reghecampf suggested that the Sudanese Elite League might potentially resume in early May 2026, more than a year after its suspension due to the ongoing conflict. This hiatus forced Al Hilal and their rivals, Al Merrikh, to seek competitive refuge in neighbouring Rwanda.

“There is a possibility [it begins] at the start of May, as the first fixture in Sudan is scheduled for May 4th. While we have not yet received a formal official notification, we remain prepared. We train every day, and we have sufficient squad depth to compete,” he concluded.
