2026 WCQ: Lesotho didn’t want to concede—South Africa coach Broos

South Africa coach Hugo Broos explained why beating Lesotho 2-0 on Friday evening was difficult for Bafana Bafana. 

The Belgian said this at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane following the Group C qualifier for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Speaking to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), Broos said Lesotho gave Bafana Bafana problems because they deployed a very defensive strategy so as not to concede.

“It was very important today that we had three points. We knew it would be a tough game played against a team that just didn’t want to lose. We had four good chances in the first half that we didn’t score. When we scored the first goal, we did the most difficult,” he said.

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams and Orlando Pirates attacker Relebohile Mofokeng scored inside three second-half minutes to seal the contest for table-topping Bafana Bafana.

Broos and company travel to West Africa for a top-of-the-table clash against Benin in Ivory Coast on March 25 while Lesotho visit Rwanda.
