Turkish Cup: Andre Onana hero, Onuachu on target as Cherif Ndiaye sent off in Trabzonspor victory

Senegal forward Chérif Ndiaye was sent off as Samsunspor squandered their last chance to return to continental competition next season following the Turkish Cup defeat against Trabzonspor in the quarterfinals.

In a game which saw Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana produce heroics, Trabzonspor finally triumphed with a 3-1 penalty shootout win after a 0-0 outcome in normal, and added time.

Onana saved three crucial penalties

Onana, who is on loan from Manchester United, made three crucial saves to help his side advance 3-1 on penalties and book their place in the semifinals.

In the penalty shootout, Onana was the hero, saving three penalties, while Okan Kocuk saved two.

The only goal for Samsunspor in the penalty shootout was scored by Logi Tomason. On the other hand, Paul Onuachu, Anthony Evakaeme and Ernest Mucci were accurate.

Ndiaye was sent off in the 68th minute

The home team played with ten men from the 68th minute due to a second yellow card for former Red Star striker Ndiaye. Trabzonspor had several good opportunities to settle the score before extra time, or penalties, but Kocuk made several great saves.

Seventh in the league with a 13-point cushion over the fourth and final European qualification spot, with four matches remaining, Samsunspor will not be playing on the continental stage next season.

Reaching the Conference League round of 16 in their debut campaign this season, eliminated by Rayo Vallecano, the Red Lightning still had the Turkish Cup as their last hope. That hope has now vanished.

Ndiaye made his debut for the Senegal national team in 2024 during a World Cup qualifier against DR Congo at the Diamniadio Olympic Stadium. He substituted Nicolas Jackson in the 90th minute as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
