De Jong relishing first taste of ‘incredible’ Soweto Derby atmosphere

Orlando Pirates’ New Zealand international Andre de Jong has opened up about the lasting impression the Soweto Derby has made on him, describing the spectacle as a life-changing experience.

The versatile attacker, who traded the Winelands for the Sea Robbers in January after leaving Stellenbosch FC, is still soaking in the magnitude of South Africa’s biggest sporting rivalry.

A Spectacle to Remember For De Jong Pirates

While De Jong was an unused substitute during Pirates’ dominant 3-0 “mauling” of Kaizer Chiefs in February in the Betway Premiership, the energy of the crowd at the FNB Stadium left an indelible mark on him.

“It was my first derby being involved… it was just incredible. I think the atmosphere was great, obviously seeing both sets of supporters, but especially the Orlando Pirates fans making a lot of noise. Seeing a lot of happy faces at the end of the game was incredible,” De Jong said.

For the Kiwi forward, the derby isn’t just another fixture; it’s a milestone. “In terms of the spectacle, it’s an amazing game to be a part of, and it’s something I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

With only five games remaining in the Betway Premiership season, De Jong is under no illusions about the importance of Sunday’s clash. Beyond the bragging rights, the Buccaneers are desperate for maximum points to solidify their league standing.

“We hope to give [the fans] those desired three points… It’s really important we get maximum points, so that’s what we’re all focused on at the moment.”

However, the Derby isn’t the only thing on De Jong’s mind. After returning from a successful FIFA break with the All Whites in March, the attacker is pushing for a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.

“To be involved in the national team, especially with the World Cup around the corner, is what everyone is really fighting for… It’s important to get out on the field and show what you can do.”

The second round game of the Soweto Derby will be staged at the FNB Stadium on Sunday with kick-off set for 15:00 CAT.
