Sa Players Union calls for sanctions after Soweto Derby brawl

The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) has officially called for a transparent and credible investigation into the violent clashes that marred the pre-match build-up of Sunday’s Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium.

While the encounter between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs eventually ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving the Buccaneers atop the Betway Premiership standings and Amakhosi firmly in third, the football itself was nearly eclipsed by scenes described as embarrassing to the image of the local game.

The union’s intervention follows a chaotic warm-up session where a physical altercation erupted in the Chiefs’ designated training zone.

The brawl, involving club officials and Pirates security, escalated to the point where SAPS intervention was required to restore order. The disruption was so severe that the Chiefs’ technical staff felt compelled to pull their players off the pitch prematurely to regroup in the safety of the dressing room. Reports suggest the violence was sparked by an attempt to block a Chiefs official from performing a suspected pre-match ritual.

In a strongly worded statement released on Tuesday, SAFPU condemned the lack of order at the Soweto Derby and emphasised that such incidents jeopardise the workplace safety of the athletes. The union stated that what transpired during the pre-match warm-up was both regrettable and unacceptable, noting that incidents of this nature risk compromising the safety and well-being of players. The union further noted that the Soweto Derby is a unifying force and that such disorder erodes public confidence in the structures governing the sport.

SAFPU is now urging the Premier Soccer League and relevant authorities to identify and punish the instigators to ensure there is no recurrence of such behavior. The union demanded that a full and credible investigation be undertaken so that perpetrators are brought to book without fear or favour. They maintained that the integrity of the game cannot be compromised by lapses in judgment or failures in responsibility.

Despite the pre-match drama, the result had significant implications for the final stretch of the campaign as Orlando Pirates remain in first place with fifty-nine points while Kaizer Chiefs hold third place with forty-seven points. As the league enters its final five matches, the focus now shifts from the pitch to the disciplinary offices, with SAFPU vowing to remain steadfast in defending the dignity and rights of the players.

“The South African Football Players Union [SAFPU] notes with grave concern the events that unfolded prior to the recent Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. What transpired during the pre-match warm-up is both regrettable and unacceptable. Incidents of this nature are not only embarrassing to the image of South African football, but they also risk compromising the safety and well-being of players. This responsibility cannot and must not be taken lightly,” reads the statement.

“Football occupies a unique place in our society. It is more than a game; it is a unifying force that reflects our shared values of respect, discipline, and collective pride. When disorder and confrontation overshadow such an occasion, it undermines the dignity of the sport and erodes public confidence in the structures entrusted with its stewardship.

“SAFPU believes this moment calls for more than routine reflection. It demands accountability, leadership, and a renewed commitment to the principles that safeguard the game and those who play it. A full, transparent, and credible investigation must be undertaken, and where wrongdoing is found, the perpetrators must be brought to book without fear or favour.

“Equally, this incident should serve as a turning point- an opportunity for all stakeholders, including clubs, match officials, security authorities, and governing bodies, to reaffirm their duty of care and to act decisively in preventing a recurrence. The safety of players is not negotiable; it is foundational.

“We must be clear: the integrity of the game cannot be compromised by lapses in judgment or failures in responsibility. The Soweto Derby stands as a symbol of excellence and heritage in African football. It must never be diminished by avoidable disorder.

“SAFPU remains steadfast in its commitment to defending the rights, safety, and dignity of players, and will continue to engage all relevant authorities to ensure that this standard is upheld.”
