Luca Zidane, goalkeeper of the Algeria national football team, is facing a major race against time ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a severe facial injury during club action.
The Granada shot-stopper sustained the injury while representing Granada CF in Spain’s second division following a violent collision with an UD Almería player.
The incident forced Zidane off the pitch during Granada’s 4-2 defeat, with the goalkeeper requiring immediate medical attention after suffering a concussion.
Granada later confirmed in an official statement that Zidane has sustained:
The club also revealed that further medical examinations will determine the best treatment plan, with surgery remaining a strong possibility.
Current projections suggest Zidane could miss the remainder of the season, while surgical intervention may seriously jeopardize his participation in the World Cup.
This injury represents a significant concern for Algeria, especially as Zidane is currently considered the team’s first-choice goalkeeper. Matters are worsened by reported injuries to backup options Anthony Mandrea and Milim Msteil.
Algeria have been drawn into World Cup Group J alongside Argentina national team, Austria national team, and Jordan national team.
They are scheduled to begin their World Cup campaign on June 16 with a high-profile clash against reigning champions Argentina national football team.
