Interim boss Bernard Parker has revealed he is using his own rollercoaster history of cup final glory and “shock” defeat to fuel TS Galaxy’s bid for silverware.
The 40-year-old—a legendary figure in South African football—is set to lead the Rockets into the Nedbank Cup final against Durban City FC at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane this Saturday.
Parker, who recently stepped into the dugout following the dismissal of Adnan Beganovic, is no stranger to the grand stage. However, his history with this specific trophy is uniquely tied to the club he now manages.
During his decorated stint at Kaizer Chiefs, Bernard Parker was the hero of the 2012/13 campaign, famously scoring a dramatic late winner to secure the cup. It is this “winner’s DNA” that he is now trying to instil in his squad.
“When I tell the players about the Nedbank Cup, I get to explain what it’s really like to be in that final,” Parker told reporters. “I have won it as a player. I scored in the dying minutes to lift that trophy. Having that experience makes the message so much stronger for the players.”
But Parker’s education isn’t just built on victories. In a twist of fate, he was also on the receiving end of one of the competition’s biggest upsets in 2019, when his heavily-favoured Chiefs side was stunned by the very team he now leads—TS Galaxy.
By sharing the pain of that defeat, Parker hopes to ensure his players don’t fall into the trap of complacency.
“I have also been at the losing end against the very same team I am coaching today,” he admitted. “It’s about making sure the players understand how massive this is. Winning this doesn’t just add a medal; it impacts their lives massively.”
While the focus remains on the trophy, the final serves as a massive audition for Parker. Having stabilised the club following a string of poor results under the previous regime, a victory on Saturday would make it increasingly difficult for the hierarchy to look elsewhere for a permanent successor.
The Rockets’ showdown with Durban City kicks off at 18:00, with a capacity crowd expected in Polokwane to see if the interim boss can complete his transition from cup-winning hero to cup-winning manager.
