U-20 Women’s World Cup (Q): Queen Cranes set for defining first leg clash with Ghana

The Uganda U-20 women’s national team, the Queen Cranes, step into a defining moment on Sunday as they take on Ghana in the first leg of the final round from the CAF region of 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifying at the Accra Sports Stadium.

With a place at the global tournament within touching distance, the fixture presents a stern test for the Ugandan side, who are determined to secure a positive result away from home before the decisive return leg.

Kick-off is slated for 3:30 PM local time (6:30 PM East Africa Time), with both teams eyeing an early advantage in the two-legged tie that will decide one of Africa’s four representatives at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Poland 2026.

The Queen Cranes arrived in Accra on Friday and have since wrapped up their preparations, using the final sessions to sharpen tactical execution and build physical readiness.

The technical bench has focused on ensuring the squad is well-drilled and mentally prepared for the high-pressure encounter.

Head coach Sheryl Ulanda Botes remains optimistic about her team’s chances, despite acknowledging the magnitude of the challenge posed by the hosts.

“We have had the feel of the stadium and the morale in camp is very positive. We have prepared thoroughly to give ourselves the best chance of getting a good result. This is bigger than us we are playing for every girl child in Uganda and the entire nation,” Botes noted after the team’s final training.

She added: “Matches like these demand character. We understand the challenge Ghana brings, but this is exactly the level we want to compete at.”

Team captain Agnes Nabukenya echoed the coach’s sentiments, emphasizing the squad’s readiness and adaptation to the conditions in Accra.

“We have adjusted well to the weather and environment, and the team is in great shape. Everyone is focused and ready to put in a strong performance,” Nabukenya said.

The tie will conclude with the return leg on Saturday, 9th May 2026 at FUFA Stadium, Kadiba, where the aggregate winner will seal qualification to the World Cup in Poland.
