Malawi Young Scorchers head coach, Maggie Chombo, has expressed firm confidence that her side can overturn their first-leg deficit against Nigeria’s Falconets in the final round of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
The Falconets secured a comfortable 2-0 victory in the opening leg, positioning themselves strongly ahead of the high-stakes return fixture.
Speaking in the aftermath of the match, Chombo maintained that Malawi still possesses a realistic chance of progressing when the two sides reconvene for the second leg in Lilongwe.
“It was a highly competitive game, but we unfortunately conceded a goal that momentarily distracted our focus. They managed to capitalize and score two goals on their home turf, and now we also have the benefit of home advantage. We firmly believe we are capable of doing the exact same,” Chombo remarked.
Malawi is scheduled to host the second leg on May 9 at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe. The Young Scorchers must now produce a commanding performance to erase the two-goal disadvantage and keep their aspirations alive of qualifying for the Poland 2027 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria’s Falconets, meanwhile, will arrive in the warm heart of Africa aiming to complete the task at hand and officially secure their place in the global tournament.
