World Cup: Ghana’s prospects bolstered by Ernest Nuamah’s long-awaited return

Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign has received a significant boost following the return of Ernest Nuamah from an extensive injury lay-off.

The explosive winger, who had been sidelined with a devastating Anterior Cruciate Ligament [ACL] injury for the past 13 months, finally made his cameo appearance during Olympique Lyon’s thrilling 4-2 French Ligue 1 victory over Rennes on Sunday.

Nuamah returns after 13 months away from the pitch

Marking the 22-year-old’s first competitive match of the season, he was introduced to the action at the Groupama Stadium as a replacement for Brazilian international Endrick with only six minutes remaining on the clock.

The home crowd enthusiastically chanted his name and applauded him warmly, later witnessing an emotional scene as he led the supporters in singing the club’s traditional anthem with a microphone in hand.

For the former FC Nordsjaelland standout, this was far more than a mere return from physical injury; it served as a powerful testament to his recovery, immense patience, and unwavering belief.

Nuamah’s successful comeback arrives at a pivotal moment as Ghana’s newly appointed head coach, Carlos Queiroz, intensifies his preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup across Mexico, Canada, and the USA.

The Black Stars, who are set to make their fifth appearance on the global stage, find themselves paired against Panama, England, and Croatia in a highly competitive Group L.
