Burundian striker Abdoul Karim Mpewinimana scored a double as Costa do Sol started their 2026 Mozambique league campaign with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Clube de Desportos da Maxaquene on Monday, 4 May 2026, in Maputo.
Mpewinimana opened the scoring for the visitors in the 34th minute before Yuri extended the lead four minutes later. The 22-year-old Burundian made it 3-0 five minutes before the break at Lalgy Arena.
Maxaquene, the five-time Mocambola league champions, sought to crawl their way back into the game. They reduced the arrears via Salomao’s strike two minutes into added time of the opening half.
In the second half, the hosts pushed for more goals, but Costa do Sol’s defence could not be breached. The visitors finally put the match to bed with a fourth goal from Muchanga in the 70th minute.
Mozambique’s Moçambola league officially got underway on Sunday, 3 May 2026, when defending champions União Desportiva de Songo (UD Songo) made a winning start.
UD Songo beat 1-0 Chingale de Tete via a 53rd-minute goal from Alcides, and in another game elsewhere, Ferroviário de Nacala thumped Ferroviário de Nampula 3-1.
Elsewhere, Angelo Cantolo was on the scoresheet as 2024 winners Black Bulls beat Ferroviário de Maputo 1-0.
The league has finally kicked off after experiencing hitches. The Mozambique Football League has been trying to put its house in order after Moçambola faced severe operational challenges last season.
Last season, Moçambola ended abruptly with three rounds of games remaining due to lack of funds.
