Ghana Premier League: Tanko fuelled by title motivation ahead of Chelsea clash

Medeama SC head coach Ibrahim Tanko remains highly motivated as his side prepares for their crucial, rescheduled Week 30 Ghana Premier League fixture against Berekum Chelsea this Wednesday.

The “Mauve and Yellow” recently extended their lead at the summit of the table to five points following a clinical 2-0 victory over defending champions Bibiani GoldStars during their Week 31 encounter at the Tarkwa TnA Park on Sunday.

Speaking to the club’s official media outlet ahead of the high-stakes trip to the Golden City Park, Tanko outlined the team’s strategic approach for the final sprint of the campaign.

“I think the motivation lies in the fact that we are five points clear with four tough matches remaining. We are firmly concentrated on the next challenge, which is Berekum Chelsea,” Tanko told MEDi TV.

Tanko: Medeama Treating ‘Every Game Like a Final’ to Secure Title

“It certainly won’t be an easy task; they possess a very strong squad regardless of their current league standing. As I’ve said before, we treat every game with the utmost seriousness—approaching each one like a cup final because there are only four hurdles left.

“Our goal is to win the league, and to do that, we must defend our current position with everything we have. Our preparations will reflect that intensity.”

Despite the gap in the standings, Tanko insists he is not taking the Berekum-based side lightly, noting that his technical team has done extensive homework on their opponents.

“[I know the Berekum Chelsea team] very well. We started the season together, and I have followed many of their matches on television. Furthermore, our video analyst will provide us with footage from their last two or three games to study.

“I know them quite well, and I maintain they are a very good side, regardless of where they sit on the log. We are going to prepare thoroughly to ensure we get the result we need.”

Medeama currently occupy the top spot in the Ghana Premier League with 56 points from 30 matches, holding a vital five-point cushion over second-placed GoldStars.

The two-time FA Cup winners have their sights firmly set on the ultimate prize as they look to secure a return to CAF continental football next season. With just four games remaining in the current campaign, Tanko is tasked with overseeing a strong finish to guarantee Medeama’s second ever Premier League crown.
