Kaizer Chiefs have been dealt a significant blow with the news that midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala will miss the remainder of the campaign after undergoing surgery on a broken arm.
The 22-year-old was forced off during Wednesday night’s hard-fought 1-1 draw against Betway Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. Shabalala had been instrumental in the opening exchanges, providing the assist for Flavio Silva’s 25th-minute opener before disaster struck on the stroke of half-time.
The club confirmed on Thursday that the young playmaker suffered a fracture to his right humerus following a heavy challenge, effectively ending his season with just three fixtures remaining.
In an official statement, Amakhosi confirmed the severity of the injury: “Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala is set for surgery after suffering a broken arm in Wednesday night’s clash against Mamelodi Sundowns in Pretoria.
“Shabalala was stretchered off following a tackle late in the first half and rushed to hospital, where scans revealed a fracture to his right humerus. He remains under medical care ahead of surgery. The expected recovery period is five to six weeks, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.”
The club added that they have extended their “well wishes” to the midfielder for a “smooth operation and a full speedy recovery.”
The injury comes at a delicate time for Chiefs. The draw in Pretoria took their points tally to 48, leaving them just four points shy of securing a vital spot in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup. Losing a primary creative spark like Shabalala will force a reshuffle as they enter the final stretch of the season.
Shabalala isn’t the only absentee facing the medical team. The club also provided a brief update on striker Wandile Duba, who missed the Sundowns fixture entirely.
Duba continues to struggle with a persistent groin injury. While the medical department is said to be “working diligently” on his rehabilitation, there is currently no firm timeline for his return to first-team action.
Meanwhile, Sundowns midfielder Adams joined Chiefs’ stars in sending well-wishes to Shabalala following the incident. Fierce rivalries were momentarily set aside after the Loftus Versfeld thriller as players from both camps rallied around the youngster.
The injury occurred following a heavy challenge involving Adams, who was later sent off in the 64th minute. Despite the intensity of the match, Adams took to Instagram to post a heartfelt message, writing: “Speedy recovery, gazi.”
As news of the fracture spread, an outpouring of support followed from the football community. Teammates and rivals alike—including Gaston Sirino, Ashley Du Preez, Lebohang Maboe, and Asanele Velebayi—flooded social media with encouraging messages for the 21-year-old.
Chiefs co-head coach Khalil Ben Youssef also offered words of inspiration to the standout performer, who has tallied 36 appearances this term. “Stay strong,” Ben Youssef posted. “This is a setback, not the end of your journey. You’ll come back stronger.”
