Black Stars: Asare replaces Aseako for Mexico friendly

The Ghana Football Association has announced that Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has been called into the Black Stars squad ahead of the upcoming international friendly against Mexico.

The 33-year-old shot-stopper, who was originally omitted from the 23-man squad, now replaces Dreams FC keeper Gidios Aseako for the match scheduled for May 22.

A social media post by the Communication Director of the Ghana Football Association, Henry Asante Twum, read:

“Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has been called up to replace Gidios Aseako for the friendly against Mexico. The Ghana international, who has 11 caps, will now travel with the team for the international friendly scheduled for Friday, May 22, 2026.”

Asare joined Hearts of Oak from rivals Great Olympics and quickly established himself as the safest pair of hands for the Phobians.

His consistency earned him a first national team invitation last year, and he went on to make his debut for Ghana against Chad in March 2025. He guided Ghana to qualify for its fifth FIFA World Cup, a feat that has endeared him to many Ghanaians.

The shot stopper has since accumulated eleven appearances for the national team. For the current Ghana Premier League season, Asare has made seventeen appearances, conceding seven times with twelve clean sheets.

Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz assembled a blend of home based and foreign players to slug it out against Mexico.

The exercise forms part of assessment of some fringe players who will be added to the main squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be staged in Mexico, Canada and USA.

Ghana is paired alongside European sides Croatia and England as well as CONCACAF representatives Panama in Group L.
