Mamelodi Sundowns veteran Denis Onyango has told supporters to keep the faith as the Betway Premiership title race heads toward a heart-stopping photo finish with rivals Orlando Pirates.
The Brazilians currently sit top of the tree, holding a slender three-point lead over the second-placed Buccaneers. However, the advantage is precarious; Pirates hold a crucial game in hand, meaning Masandawana’s fate is no longer entirely in their own hands.
Sundowns are set to conclude their league campaign on Tuesday night in a high-stakes clash against TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium (19:30). Even a victory in that fixture only keeps them in the driving seat temporarily—their ultimate destiny depends on how Pirates fare in their final two outings against Durban City FC and Orbit College FC.

For Onyango, the tension of the current run-in is familiar territory. The veteran shot-stopper has pointed to the dramatic 2019/20 campaign—concluded in a bio-bubble due to the COVID-19 pandemic—as the perfect blueprint for a late heist.
During that season, Sundowns appeared to be dead and buried as Kaizer Chiefs surged to a commanding 13-point lead. Yet, in a sensational collapse that remains etched in South African football folklore, Amakhosi faltered at the finish line. A 1-1 draw with Baroka FC on the final day denied Chiefs the crown, allowing Sundowns to snatch the title at the death with a 3-0 win over Black Leopards.
“Sundowns supporters must keep on believing because we have done it before,” Onyango insisted. “We won it at the death in the Free State, and we won it again in the bubble. They must believe it’s possible, regardless of the situation not being in our hands.”
The Brazilians are no strangers to edge-of-the-seat finales. In 2019, they pipped Tuesday’s rivals, Pirates, to the title in a similar fashion. On that occasion, a narrow 1-0 win over Free State Stars on the final day ensured Sundowns took the trophy by two points, rendering Pirates’ 3-0 victory over Polokwane City irrelevant.
With a massive CAF Champions League final against AS FAR also on the horizon, Onyango is demanding total focus from the squad.
“As senior players, we have to push the boys because every game counts,” Onyango added. “Every game is a final. We have to end the season on a high, regardless of what’s happening around us in the league. We can’t guarantee that other people will win, but we have to stay focused and win our game against TS Galaxy.”
Sundowns enter the final stretch with the weight of history behind them, but with the Buccaneers waiting for any slip-up, the margin for error has officially vanished.
