A new era begins: Mabena on Chiefs Ladies’ historic debut

Kaizer Chiefs Ladies coach Unathi Mabena has shared her team’s collective feeling ahead of their debut in South Africa’s second-tier women’s league on Sunday, 17 May 2026.

Mabena said she is anxious as Chiefs Ladies head to Tsakane Stadium to play their first official match against Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies in the 2026 Gauteng Women’s Provincial League opening fixture.

The Glamour Girls mentor told her club’s website that she understands the magnitude of the moment and the responsibility that comes with playing in the league.

Kaizer Chiefs Ladies anxious

“The players are excited, but naturally there is also anxiety because this is such a big occasion for everyone involved,” Mabena said.

“To represent the biggest football brand in the country is an honour and the players understand the responsibility that comes with wearing this badge.”

Mabena added that he is fully aware of what it takes to compete in the Gauteng Women’s Provincial League, drawing from her playing experience.

The coach, therefore, called for patience to allow the newly formed side take baby steps and grow into a formidable force.

Targeting Hollywoodbets Super League

“We also have to be realistic and manage expectations,” she explains.

“We are facing a team that has been competing consistently in this environment for a long time and has produced strong performances over the years.

“For us, this is the beginning of a process. We are building something, and moments like these are part of that journey.”

Mabena added their long-term objective is to grow through the Sasol league and eventually graduate into the top-tier Hollywoodbets Super League.
