Croky Cup: Fuseini scores extra-time winner as Union Saint-Gilloise lift fourth title

Super sub Mohamed Fuseini and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise lifted Belgium’s Croky Cup following a 3-1 victory after extra-time over Anderlecht in Thursday’s final. The Brussels derby final was played at the Lotto Park which saw Union SG triumph in extra-time with the Ghanaian forward scoring the eventual match winner.

After a drab start to the game, both clubs showed glimpses of seriousness after the opening quarter of an hour yet failed to find the back of the net.

However, Union SG struck first through Kevin Mac Allister after returning from a goalless first half. The midfielder met a cross from Anan Khalaili to open the scoring 74th minute to make the score line 1-0.

Anderlecht left no stone unturned, responding seven minutes later with Mihajlo Cvetkovic who finished following perfect teamwork by Thorgan Hazard and Lucas Hey.

The two teams had to settle the match in extra time, where Union quickly regained the lead through Fuseini, who scored in the 95th minute to peg the game at 2-1. Kevin Rodriguez then completed the job on a counter-attack, scoring the third in the 100th minute.

Another cup win for Union Saint-Gilloise, who will look to complete double

Having won the second and third editions of the Belgian Cup in 1913 and 1914, Union ended a 110-year drought in 2024 by defeating Antwerp in the final. Two years later, Union repeated the feat against their neighbors Anderlecht, lifting their fourth Belgian Cup.

Next the cup winners will be traveling to Club Brugge on Sunday (6:30 PM) for a crucial match that will determine the Jupiler Pro League title. Brugge holds a one-point lead over the Brussels side heading into this clash in the eighth and penultimate round of the championship phase.

For this season, Fuseini has scored 3 goals from 24 appearances in all competitions, with 2 goals in cup action while mainly featuring as a substitute. He has now scored in back-to-back matches after also netting in last Saturday’s 3-0 league victory over KV Mechelen, his first goal of the season in the Jupiler Pro League.
