Five goals in two games: Temwa Chawinga insists not 100 percent fit

Reigning America’s National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Most Valuable Player (MVP) Temwa Chawinga insists the best is yet to come from her this 2026-2027 season despite her recent upswing in form.

The Kansas City Current FC’s Malawian forward has been in sparkling form, scoring five goals in the last two consecutive NWSL games to gatecrash the Golden Boot Award race.

Despite taking her season’s league tally to five goals in nine outings, four behind Golden Boot Award pacesetter Barbra Banda of Orlando Pride, the Scorchers’ guiding light insists she is not even 100 per cent match fit.

Temwa Chawinga’s career in numbers

“I am coming back strongly little by little. Like I said, I am not 100 per cent fully recovered. I thank my teammates. They help me a lot in training to come back strongly,” she told Kansas City Current FC media.

The Malawian international netted a double for Kansas City Current FC in their 3-0 victory over Houston Dash on Saturday.

The 27-year-old is on course to defend the NWSL Golden Boot Award she bagged last season after chalking 15 goals in 23 league appearances, to make it two on the trot.

Stellar 2025 season

The former DD Sunshine attacker had a stellar 2025 season that saw her first ever Ballon d’Or nomination and finished number 17 in the final rankings.

Additionally, the Scorchers’ ace also earned nominations for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s Player of the Year and The Best FIFA Women’s Player.

In a seeming response, Zambia women’s national team captain Banda restored her four-goal gap from Temwa Chawinga after scoring in Sunday’s 3-1 loss to Denver Summit FC at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park.

City Current FC will be in action again on Thursday, 21 May on the road to face Angel FC while Banda’s team visit San Diego Wave FC at Snapdragon Stadium on Sunday, May 24 (7 p.m. ET; Victory+).
