The Ethiopian Premier League title race took a dramatic turn following a crucial victory by league leaders Ethiopian Insurance and a setback for second-placed Ethiopian Coffee, who were held to a draw by already relegated Wolwalo Adigrat University. In the aftermath, both clubs submitted official letters raising concerns over events surrounding Ethiopian Insurance’s 3-0 win against Sidama Coffee.
Ethiopian Coffee alleged that the match involved unethical conduct, arguing that the result undermines the integrity of the league and hampers the growth of football in the country. The club urged the Ethiopian Premier League Share Company to investigate the game and make an appropriate ruling.
In response, Ethiopian Insurance strongly rejected the accusations, labeling them baseless and unwarranted. The club emphasized its commitment to developing football in Ethiopia and denied any involvement in match-fixing. Insurance further accused Coffee of launching a defamation campaign without providing concrete evidence.
The gap between the two title contenders now stands at eight points, with four matches remaining. Allegations of match-fixing have become a recurring issue during the closing stages of the league, often emerging when clubs are fighting for the championship or battling relegation. However, investigations are frequently hampered by a lack of evidence, making it difficult for league authorities to take decisive action.
