Chippa United head coach Thabo September has opened up on his future at the Betway Premiership club, with his contract running out at the end of the season.
September has managed to keep the Chilli Boys afloat in the second round of the season after head coach Kwanele Kopo left his position. The 42-year-old has managed to keep Chippa out of the relegation zone, and they are fighting to finish in the top eight.
Chippa suffered a 3-0 defeat against leaders Mamelodi Sundowns at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday. Speaking after the loss, the former SuperSport United captain revealed that his contract with Chippa is expiring at the end of the season. But there have, however, been ‘signs’ of renewal.
“We will need to refresh the squad [next season] but I feel like we’ve got a good group, a good mixture of young and experienced players,” September said. “I’m happy with how the younger ones came in the second half of the season, it’s really motivating and encouraging for us as a technical team and a football club.
“So we will just need to go into the transfer market and look for better quality to beef up our squad, if we want to have a good season next season.
“As for me, we haven’t started having discussions yet about my contract, my contract ends now [at the end of the season]. I have a two-year option on my contract, and we will start the talks. The signs are there for me to stay, but we haven’t sat down and discussed the contract.”
September was given the coaching role at Chippa with Mabhuti Khayeza serving as his assistant coach. They sit eighth on the league table with 30 points after winning eight league matches, drawing six, and losing on 12 occasions in 26 matches.
