The Kenyan national team, Harambee Stars, will return to action when they take on Chad in their second international friendly match at Stade de Marrakech in Morocco on Tuesday.
The second fixture will kick off at 6pm. The East African nation came up against the same side on Saturday, also at the same venue, but only managed a 0-0 draw despite dominating both halves.
The performance left South African coach Benni McCarthy, who is still searching for his first win in charge of the team, frustrated and turning up the heat on his players for their failure to capitalise on the chances they created.
“It’s our first match together for most of these players, so you could see… we need to understand each other better. But when you dominate a match like this, then you have to be very disappointed that you did not win or did not score goals,” said McCarthy.
“It was so easy for us to play, they [Chad] sat back very low, defended the middle of the pitch and then we were just not patient enough. The biggest disappointment is the fact that we didn’t score because we had so many opportunities.
“I don’t want to say the referee didn’t give that penalty — the game was so far beyond them. It was so easy for us to not blame the referee because we were that dominant and then you don’t take your chances, don’t score the goals you expect and don’t create enough to win by more than two or three goals.
“It is something for us to go back and work on. We did not lose the match, but for me, the fact that you don’t win a match like this is so devastating.
“This is international level, so you have to maintain the intensity and pace of the game. You have to keep it quick and move the ball quickly and create chances. I think we did not do that a lot and that is what cost us, and we ended up drawing a game we should have won easily.”
McCarthy may be forced to start the same side that featured on Saturday, with Brian Bwire between the sticks, while Daniel Sakari, Aboud Omar, Alphonse Omija, and Brian Mandela provide cover for the Polokwane City custodian.
The midfield could revolve around Alpha Onyango, Brian Musa, and Boniface Muchiri, while William Lenkupae will likely play behind strikers Adam Wilson and Moses Shumah.
Heading into the two build-up matches, Kenya had drawn one and lost one of their previous two games, while Chad had suffered back-to-back defeats. Kenya managed a thrilling 3-3 comeback draw against Gambia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers before falling 2-1 to Gabon.
Meanwhile, in the same qualifiers, Chad suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat to Ghana before losing 1-0 to Comoros in their matchday six fixture at Stade Municipal de Berkane.
