The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has officially confirmed that Durban City FC will receive the Motsepe Foundation Championship trophy on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
The ceremony, which crowns them 2024/25 champions and confirms their promotion to the Betway Premiership, will be broadcast live on SuperSport PSL Channel (202) from 5:00 PM (CAT).
This announcement, made on Monday, comes after a delay in the trophy handover, which was initially postponed on the final day of the season. The delay stemmed from protests lodged by JDR Stars and Cape Town Spurs regarding the eligibility of Durban City player Sazi Magawana.
Both clubs argued that Magawana was improperly registered by Durban City after his move from Marumo Gallants, arguing his clearance should have come from Leruma United, who had purchased Gallants’ PSL status.
Both the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) and a subsequent SAFA arbitration dismissed these protests. However, Cape Town Spurs have since elevated their fight to the High Court, challenging the ruling made by arbitrator Hilton Epstein SC, who sided with Durban City and Magawana.
The High Court matter is set to be heard on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at the Gauteng Division in Johannesburg. The PSL, SAFA, and all other 15 Motsepe Foundation Championship teams are listed as respondents in this legal challenge.
Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, the PSL has decided to proceed with the championship celebrations for Durban City FC.
