Ghana Premier League giants Asante Kotoko have augmented their squad ahead of next season’s domestic and continental campaign.
The record Ghana Premier League holders were crowned champions of the 2025 MTN FA Cup after squeezing a 2-1 win over Division One side, Golden Kicks SC at the Legon Stadium.
The victory qualified them for the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup and head coach, Abdul Karim Zito needs a reinforcement for the challenge ahead.
The Porcupine Warriors have therefore roped in defender Francis Acquah from Bechem United to strengthen the back line and the 24-year-old confirmed that he turned down several clubs to join Kotoko due to the opportunity to play in continental football.
“There were other clubs interested, but the stature of Asante Kotoko and the fact that we’ll be competing in the CAF Confederation Cup played a big role in my decision,” Acquah told the club’s media.
“I’ve always heard about the passion and support this club receives in continental football, and I’m eager to be part of it for as long as I’m here,” he added.
The two time African champions also announced the signing of former Dreams fc forward, Johnson Owusu Oppong to boost their wing play for next season.
Speaking to the club’s media, Oppong downplayed pressure at Kotoko while promising to give his best for the team.
“You always feel the pressure anywhere you go as a player. I know Kotoko is a very big club so the demand will be high, but I’m here to do my best for the club. Asante Kotoko means a lot to me” he said.
His time at Dreams FC was particularly memorable, where he played a pivotal role in the club’s historic journey to the semi-finals of the 2023/24 CAF Confederation Cup.
Midfielder, Hubert Gyau, who joined the Porcupine Warriors from former champions Berekum Chelsea, has opened up about his ambitions ahead of next season. Speaking in his first interview after joining the MTN FA Cup Champions, Gyau said he aims to help the club win trophies immediately.
“I’m proud to be joining Asante Kotoko. I believe this is the right place for me to develop further. My aim is to help the club win things immediately, and to use this opportunity to take another big step in my career by earning a move to a top European club one day,” Hubert Gyau said as quoted on the website of Kotoko.
Asante Kotoko shared the third spot with rivals Hearts of Oak on 58 points after 34 games in the just ended season.
