Nigeria national team captain William Troost-Ekong has backed the three-time African champions to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco as well as qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Last year, the Super Eagles were beaten in the final of the 2023 AFCON by hosts Cote d’Ivoire. While speaking during an interview, Troost-Ekong said that the team is more determined to achieve continental success.

“With the group of players we have now – immensely talented and motivated – our focus is to win the next AFCON and ensure Nigeria is present at the 2026 World Cup.”

The Saudi Arabia-based defender also said the aim to succeed is personal as the team is more hungry for an AFCON success after the 2023 final disappointment.

“We came close last time (to win the 2023 AFCON), and that experience has made us even hungrier. As captain, the goal is even more personal. We want to bring joy to Nigerians by achieving something truly special.”

For the 2025 AFCON, the Super Eagles are drawn in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania.

Nigeria are currently fourth in their World Cup qualifying group, but hope South Africa’s lead at the top of the group is reduced should they be docked three points and three goals for fielding an ineligible player against Lesotho during the last round of qualifying games in March.
