Nigeria striker Gift Monday admits disappointment after WAFCON snub

Washington Spirit forward Gift Monday has confirmed her disappointment after being left out of the 24-woman Nigeria squad for next month’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, despite displaying top form for the USA-based club.

Via social media, Monday expressed her thoughts on the shock exclusion from the Super Falcons final squad as she dismissed speculations that she is injured.

“Sometimes the hardest moments reveal the strength of our hearts. I have seen the official squad list for the upcoming WAFCON tournament and yes, my name isn’t on it. While it hurts and is a tough pill to swallow, I want to make it clear that I hold no grudges, no resentment.

“I am hale and hearty, fully fit, and still deeply in love with the game and the Green White Green.”

The forward also sent out her support for Super Falcons as she cheered them to go out their and make history.

“Though I won’t be on the pitch with the team in Morocco, my heart will be there every step of the way. I remain fully committed to cheering my country from home, lifting every prayer and every shout of support for the badge we all fight so hard to represent.”

“To the incredible women who made the squad, go out there and make history. Let your passion roar. Let your pride show. You carry the hopes of millions including mine. Come on Super Falcons. Let’s fly high.”

Gift Monday joined the Washington Spirit in March 2025 and has since made a notable impact. She has played in 9 NWSL games and has scored 4 goals and provided 1 assist, demonstrating her attacking prowess for the Spirit.
