The whispers have finally become a roar as SuperSport United has officially been sold to Siwelele FC. This shift marks the end of an era for one of the Betway Premiership’s most decorated clubs.

SuperSport International confirmed the landmark deal on Thursday, though it still awaits the crucial green light from the PSL executive committee.

SuperSport International announced that Siwelele FC was awarded the rights to purchase the Tshwane-based side following a closed bidding process. This move comes as SuperSport makes strategic shifts to maintain its position as Africa’s largest broadcaster and a leading global competitor.

“The sale of the club comes as SuperSport makes strategic shifts to allow us to remain the biggest broadcaster in Africa and a leading global competitor,” stated SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha.

“Shifts in the market, as well as the need to innovate in accordance with our core business, have necessitated focused direction to allow SuperSport to remain the best sports content provider on the continent and a leader in broadcast innovation.”

Siwelele FC chairman Calvin le John expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition, saying, “As Siwelele F.C, we are privileged to have been given the responsibility of continuing with a rich winning tradition in the PSL. SuperSport and the MultiChoice Group laid an incredible 30-year platform that we wish to build upon, should we get the final vote of approval from the PSL Executive Committee.”

Both Siwelele FC, MultiChoice, and SuperSport will refrain from further statements out of respect for the ongoing PSL executive committee processes.

Sources close to Pan-Africa Football suggest the sale was for R50 million, and the club is expected to relocate to Bloemfontein for the new season and be rebranded as Siwelele FC.

The sale comes amidst recent financial constraints for Matsatsantsa, reportedly due to a decline in MultiChoice subscribers, the group that owned SuperSport United. For years, SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews had consistently dismissed reports of the club’s sale, but this time, the change in ownership is confirmed.
