Shafiq Kagimu calls for grassroots focus and discipline ahead of CHAN 2024

As Uganda intensifies preparations for the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), midfielder Shafiq Kagimu has called on stakeholders to prioritize investment in grassroots football and infrastructure to ensure the country’s long-term success on the continental stage.

Speaking in an interview with NBS Sport, the former URA FC player emphasized the need for unity within the football fraternity—especially among coaches—as a catalyst for nurturing emerging talent.

“We need to support the young talents through the coaching staff and teach them leadership,” Kagimu stated. “Investing more in facilities such as stadiums and equipment is key.”

Now plying his trade in North Macedonia, Kagimu shared that his transition to European football is progressing smoothly, crediting his adaptability and commitment.

“(North) Macedonia is treating me well, and I’m adjusting more in football by keeping and maintaining consistency,” he said.

He also underlined the critical role of discipline, warning that raw talent alone is not enough to build a successful football career.

“Discipline is a key pillar in any player’s career,” Kagimu noted. “Without focus and consistency, talent fades quickly.”

Kagimu’s remarks come at a pivotal moment for Ugandan football, as the country seeks to not only perform well at CHAN 2024 but also to lay a sustainable foundation for future generations. His call echoes broader conversations around structural reform, infrastructure development, and long-term planning in the sport.
