WAFCON: Senegal coach Cissé targets victory over hosts Morocco

Senegal women’s national team coach Mame Moussa Cissé said his players are preparing to win their final 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) group stage match against hosts Morocco. Senegal are currently third in Group A with three points, and a win would take them to the quarterfinals.

Group A Table (2 games played)

Points GD
Morocco 4 +2
Zambia 4 +1
Senegal 3 +3
DR Congo 0 -6

Cissé’s side began the campaign with a resounding 4-0 victory over DR Congo but fell 3-2 to a strong Zambian side on matchday two. The coach said Senegal are aiming for a win in the decisive encounter. “We are preparing for this match the same way. We are looking to win. Even against Zambia, a favorite team, we were looking to win, and we have the same mindset to face Morocco.”

Cissé acknowledged that the hosts are the favorites going into the match. “Morocco is naturally the favorite. We are outsiders, challengers. But we will give ourselves the means to play the right match. The objective doesn’t change. It remains qualification for the second round.”

The last time the two national sides met, Morocco emerged victorious with a 7-0 win in a friendly match. In the 2022 WAFCON, Morocco also managed a 1-0 win over Senegal in the group stage. Morocco currently top the group with four points, followed by Zambia.
