Ghana women’s national team head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has indicated that his charges must create better chances in their upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) game against Algeria.
The Black Queens face the North Africans on Saturday in the WAFCON quarterfinals with their game set to take place in Berkane, Morocco.
Ghana qualified after finishing second in Group C, sealing their place with a 4-1 win over Tanzania. Algeria, on the other hand, progressed from a tough Group B without conceding a goal despite facing Nigeria, Tunisia, and Botswana.
Björkegren said: “Algeria are a really well-organised team, especially in defence, and they have a good goalkeeper,” Bjorkegren said.
“We’ve talked about the need to make it a little more difficult for them. We can’t just shoot from 45 meters and hope for the best. We need to create better chances and be clinical. There’s no need to look for fancy goals.”
He added, “It’s going to be a difficult game, but I believe in the players. I’m sure they’ll put in a good performance.”
Ghana are yet to win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations despite being one of the best female football nations on the continent. They were runners-up at the 1998, 2002 and 2006 editions and have also qualified for three FIFA Women’s World Cups.
