Benni McCarthy ‘withdraws’ Harambee Stars from CECAFA tourney

Kenya’s Harambee Stars have withdrawn from the CECAFA Four Nations Tournament in Tanzania on coach Benni McCarthy’s recommendations.

The Bafana Bafana legend reportedly advised the Kenyan Football Federation (FKF) that the conditions were unsuitable for his team to take part in the competition.

A statement from the federation confirms McCarthy’s reservations with the tournament, hours after the Harambee Stars were set to take on Uganda in the opener today, Monday.

“The decision has been made following recommendations and advice from the team’s technical bench, led by head coach Benni McCarthy, after a thorough assessment of the prevailing conditions, which were deemed unsuitable for the team’s participation and overall preparation,” the statement reads.

“The team will return to Kenya and resume preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, with full focus now shifting to ensuring optimal readiness for the assignment ahead.”

The Harambee Stars’ pull out comes on the very same day the tournament is starting on Monday at Karatu Stadium in Tanzania with guests Senegal, the Taifa Stars and the Cranes being the other participants.

Kenya are gearing up—on and off the field of play—to co-host the continental competition for home-based players alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
