Exclusive: PSL clubs thought I was finished – Mzava

Former South Africa’s Magesi FC defender Limbikani Mzava has explained why he passed up opportunities to join Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs and opted for Penang FC in the Malaysian Super League.

Speaking from Malaysia, the Malawian said his axing from the Carling Black Label Cup reigning champions in January 2025 created an impression that his PSL career was ‘finished.’

“I played for six months for Magesi and after my release, some teams thought I was done and finished. I had an opportunity to join a PSL club in Venda, but what they offered me was way too low. It was as good as hanging up my boots and exploring other ventures outside football,” the centre-back told Pan-Africa Football.

How the Malawian’s switch to Penang FC happened

Mzava’s transfer to Magesi in 2024 also came after he spent over a season without kicking the ball following his off-loading from another PSL side, AmaZulu FC.

However, one of his former trainers, who saw his video in training, opened the door for a return to competive football last season. He eventually helped Magesi to win the Carling Black Label Cup.

The former Bloemfontein Celtic defender disclosed that his transfer to Penang happened in a similar manner to the Magesi’s deal.

“I met one of the agents from this side. I eventually sent him a video and he facilitated my trials in Malaysia. That is how I got signed,” Mzava explained.

What Mzava’s transfer to Malaysian Super League means

The former Flames captain said he has set himself a target of impressing at Penang during the one-year contract, but not for personal gains.

The ex-Lamontville Golden Arrows defender said: “I am so happy to continue with my journey and looking forward to working so hard so that I can lift the team up. I am looking forward to opening doors in Malaysia for other players in Malawi.”

The Malawian received a career lifeline early last season when coach Clinton Larsen plucked him from what seemed an early retirement to sign for Magesi.

Mzava’s experience proved handy as the 2024 Betway Premiership rookies pulled a coup to win their first major trophy in the elite league of South Africa.

The former Mpumalanga Black Aces player was a key feature in Magesi’s defence as they stunned fancied Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 to win the Carling Black Label Cup last November.

However, Larsen and his wards failed spectacularly to transfer their cup form into the Betway Premiership, a factor that cost the coach his job.

The exit of the former Celtic mentor also marked the end of Mzava’s romance with Magesi. Then new coach Owen Da Gama axed the former Flames captain alongside other players in January this year.

The Panthers, as Penang are also called, have since welcomed the Malawian, saying he is the sort of a defender they were looking for.

“Say hello! to Limbikani Oscar Mzava, the commanding centre-back ready to anchor the Panthers’ defence with strength and authority! Wearing jersey number 5, Mzava brings grit, aerial power, and natural leadership—just what Penang FC needs to tighten things up at the back!”

“Defenders win games, too, and this one is built to dominate! Let’s give him a proud Penang welcome!” the club’s statement reads.

Penang compete in Malaysian Super League and were established in 1921. The club has won silverware, including Malaysian FA Cup.
