The Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) 3 Nations Tournament continued on with its second round on Thursday with Uganda defeating Senegal by a 2-1 score at the Black Rhino Stadium in Karatu, Tanzania.
After a scoreless first half, goals in quick succession from SC Villa players Patrick Kakande and Arnold Odong put Uganda’s Cranes ahead 2-0 before Serigne Moctar Koité pulled a late goal back for the Senegalese selection. The 3 Nations Tournament is serving as a brief preparation tournament for Uganda, Tanzania and Senegal before the African Nations Championship (CHAN) begins on August 2 in East African nations Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya.
Odong put the Cranes ahead in the 64th minute when the Senegalese defense failed to clear a corner kick and Odong’s hopeful volley looped over the line before it could be cleared. Comical play on the ball from Senegal goalkeeper Marc Philips Diouf led to a foul inside the penalty area and Kakande’s powerful spot kick doubled Uganda’s lead.
Late on, a deflected shot from distance saw Senegal midfielder Serigne Moctar Koité react quickest to pounce on the loose ball and finish past Cranes keeper Joel Mutakubwa.
Uganda previously lost the tournament opener to neighbors Tanzania by a 1-0 score. The tournament will conclude on Sunday when Senegal face Tanzania before all three teams prepare for the group stage of the CHAN.
