Cameroonian forward Aaron Bibout takes next step in development with move to Genk

After a successful brief spell in Sweden, Cameroonian striker Aaron Bibout continued his career progression on Thursday with a move to KRC Genk of Belgium’s Jupiler Pro League.

The 20-year-old physically imposing striker joins Genk after four months with Swedish second tier side Västerås SK, where he scored 6 goals in 12 games in the Superettan. Bibout emphasized Genk’s track record of developing talent upon his signing: “I know that KRC Genk is a club that develops young players. I’ve come here to work hard and improve step by step. I’m eager to prove myself in Belgium and in Europe.”

Born in Yaoundé, Bibout began his development with Cameroon’s famed Kadji Sports Academy whose most famous graduate is Samuel Eto’o as well as other notable Cameroon national team players such as Stéphane Mbia, Eric Djemba Djemba and Aurélien Chedjou.

Bibout’s first steps abroad were taken in the United States where he moved to Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy in March 2023 after spending time with the club’s academy as well as at the academy of local rivals Los Angeles FC. He quickly impressed with the Galaxy’s reserve team, Ventura County FC (f.k.a. LA Galaxy II), where he produced 26 goals and 9 assists in 53 appearances and also appeared twice for the Galaxy first team before moving to Sweden. Bibout also spent time on loan at USA second tier sides Tulsa FC and Detroit City.

Bibout joins Genk on a four-year contract and appears likely to be assigned to the club’s reserve team, Jong Genk, which competes in the Belgian second tier Challenger Pro League. He is also a Cameroonian youth international having previously appeared for Cameroon’s U-17 selection.
