President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, accompanied by the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni, officially launched the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 on Friday, July 25, 2025, at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala.
In his keynote speech, President Museveni applauded CHAN 2024 as a milestone event for Uganda, emphasizing its significance in uniting the country, strengthening regional ties, and positioning Uganda as a center for continental sporting excellence.
“Sports builds stamina, character, and teamwork. It teaches us to coordinate and work together. This CHAN tournament is more than just football—it’s a symbol of East African brotherhood,” the President stated.
He further noted, “Just like CHOGM helped improve our infrastructure, CHAN 2024 is also driving positive change. It will showcase Uganda to the rest of the world and attract more visitors to our beautiful country.”
The First Lady, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, described CHAN 2024 as a historic moment for Uganda’s development and unity.
“This tournament is not only about football. It’s a moment of reflection for our nation—on how far we’ve come and how sports can foster joy, pride, and togetherness,” she said.
She added that Uganda’s role in co-hosting CHAN alongside Kenya and Tanzania is a demonstration of regional strength and capacity.
“We have upgraded and constructed facilities like FUFA Kadiba, Muteesa II Stadium, and Kyambogo Stadium. These investments are long-term assets for future generations. We’re grateful to the President for his vision in supporting the PAMOJA bid,” she concluded.
East African Community (EAC) Secretary General, Ms. Veronica Mueni Nduva, commended Uganda’s role in advancing regional integration through sports.
“Uganda’s commitment reflects the shared vision of East Africa. The CHAN tournament goes beyond the pitch—it fosters discipline, unity, and development throughout the region,” she said.
FUFA President Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim reiterated FUFA’s drive to elevate football beyond just a sport.
“At FUFA, we envision football as a socio-economic activity. Hosting major tournaments like CHAN helps us achieve that vision. We thank the Government for ensuring the peace, stability, and infrastructure that make such events possible.”
Magogo also acknowledged the recent legal reforms supporting sports development and called for sports to be fully integrated into national development agendas.
The CHAN 2024 tournament is scheduled to run from August 2 to August 30, 2025, and will be jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania under the banner of the “PAMOJA” bid—symbolizing unity and shared ambition.
