Worku left his post at the Omdurman-based outfit in June 2025, before the start of the Sudan Elite League. The young coach followed in the footsteps of DR Congolese coach Florent Ibenge in leaving Al Hilal and will now rejoin the head coach at Azam FC. Azam named Ibenge as their new coach a few weeks ago.
Worku was tipped to take over the helm at Ethiopian Premier League side Fasil Kenema. Pan-Africa Football understands that the Emperors tabled a five-year deal to Worku, but they are yet to formalize their split from head coach Wubetu Abate. A close source told Pan-Africa Football that Azam gave Worku until Friday, July 26, to decide whether he would take the job at the club. Now, the young Ethiopian coach is set to join the club in East Africa.
Born in Addis Ababa, Worku is a football tactics enthusiast who first emerged as a columnist in a weekly Ethiopian newspaper named Ethio Sport. His determination helped him become a video analyst and earn his coaching license in Ireland. He is credited with helping Saint George to back-to-back league titles in 2022 and 2023, together with head coach Zerihun Shengeta.
Worku has also worked as a video analyst for the Uganda and Zambia national sides under the guidance of Serbian coach Micho Sredojević.
