Nigeria dominate WAFCON 2024 individual awards

The Nigeria women’s national team have etched their name in history by securing a record-extending tenth Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title. But the Super Falcons also swept the individual accolades of the 2024 edition with captain Rasheedat Ajibade crowned the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament and Chiamaka Nnadozie recognized as the Best Goalkeeper.

Adding to Nigeria’s glory, head coach Justin Madugu was named the Coach of the Tournament, solidifying the Super Falcons’ complete dominance at in Morocco.

Ajibade scooped three Player of the Match awards across Nigeria’s six games, leading to Nigeria’s dramatic WAFCON triumph.

The captain, delivered consistent, high-impact performances throughout the competition. Her relentless work rate, creative play, and crucial contributions were instrumental in navigating the Super Falcons through a challenging tournament.

Meanwhile, Nnadozie, who recently joined English club Brighton, kept four clean sheets in the competition.

Nnadozie was a cornerstone of Nigeria’s defensive solidity, with her composure under pressure, particularly in the tense semi-final victory over defending champions South Africa, showcased why she is regarded as one of Africa’s safest pair of hands.

The man at the helm, Justin Madugu, was named the Coach of the Tournament. In his maiden WAFCON as head coach, Madugu orchestrated a remarkable campaign, guiding the Super Falcons to their historic tenth WAFCON title.

Despite initial skepticism from some fans in the earlier stages, Madugu’s ability to blend experienced players with emerging talent, and unwavering belief in his squad were pivotal. His halftime talk in the final, with Nigeria trailing 2-0, inspired a second-half turnaround that ultimately secured the trophy for his side.

Morocco’s Ghizlaine Chebbak emerged as the top scorer of the WAFCON 2024 tournament, claiming the Golden Boot with 5 goals. Meanwhile, the Fair Play Award, recognizing discipline and sportsmanship throughout the competition, was presented to South Africa.
