Tanzania finish CHAN preparation with CECAFA 3 Nations victory over Senegal

The CECAFA 3 Nations Tournament concluded on Sunday with hosts Tanzania defeating Senegal by a 2-1 score as both teams finished up their final preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN). Tanzania finished the mini-tournament with wins from both their games, having defeated Uganda 1-0 last Tuesday.

Senegal, who lost their other match at the tournament to Uganda, got off to a strong start in the 8th minute when Mapathe Mbodji nodded into an empty net after Tanzania goalkeeper Hussein Masalanga spilled Libasse Gueye’s corner kick.

But the Taifa Stars would respond early in the second half with a two-goal punch to turn the match on its head. Azam FC right back Iddy Nado was tripped up at the edge of the Senegalese penalty area for a penalty kick which was converted by Nado’s club teammate Abdul Hamisi Suleiman to level affairs.

Tanzania continued to apply pressure and only a couple of minutes later they were ahead. A corner kick found its way through to Suleiman at the far post, who sent a hard cross through the six-yard box where Ibrahim Abdulla Baka turned in from close range.

Now the teams will turn their attention to the CHAN finals co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. Tanzania kick off the tournament on Saturday against Burkina Faso in Group B while Senegal begin play in Group D next Tuesday against Nigeria.
