Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya
The anticipation continues to build up in East Africa for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) and supporters of Kenya will be flocking in droves to the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi with confirmation that the Harambee Stars’ opener is sold out.
Kenya will kick off action in Group A on August 3 against DR Congo and Benni McCarthy’s team will have full support at the 55,000 capacity stadium for what is anticipated to be a difficult clash against a Leopards team that has won the competition twice since it was first staged in 2009. Kenya will also have to deal with the likes of Angola, Morocco and Zambia in what is anticipated to be a “Group of Death”.
“It is true that so far there are no tickets for the game between the Harambee Stars and DR Congo, they have already sold out,” Football Kenya Federation information officer Jeff Kinyanjui confirmed to Tanzanian outlet Mwanaspoti.
Kinyanjui acknowledged that social media campaigns were successful as well as the hunger for Kenyan supporters to see their team play at home. The Harambee Stars have only been able to play in front of their home supporters for a competitive match once in the last two years, a 1-2 defeat to Gabon in 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying that drew passionate support to the Nyayo National Stadium. During the previous period, Kenya did not have a home stadium that adequately met the standards of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Led by charismatic head coach and former South Africa national team star striker Benni McCarthy, the excitement is high for the Kenyan team. Led by the likes of Gor Mahia playmaker Austin Odhiambo, it will be interesting to see if the Harambee Stars rise to the occasion in a difficult Group A. Another potential star, Kenya Police attacker Mohammed Bajaber, left the squad due to an imminent transfer to Tanzanian giants Simba SC.
