Nigeria Super Falcons conferred with OON honour by President Tinubu

Nigeria president Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on members of the Nigeria women’s senior national team. The Super Falcons clinched a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in a thrilling final against host nation Morocco on Saturday.

President Tinubu made this announcement during a grand reception held on Monday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Nigeria, where he hosted the players and the entire coaching and technical crew.

The number one citizen of Nigeria, visibly elated by the team’s heroic achievement, hailed their spirit and unity.

“On behalf of the great grateful nation, I hereby confer on the players, the 11-man technical team with national honour of Officer, Order of the Niger, OON. This victory is more than a sporting accomplishment. It is a triumph of courage, determination, discipline, and consistency.”

He went further to stated that the Super Falcons are inspirations to their fellow Nigerians, especially young girls, as they are a symbol of hope for the nation.

“You have inspired millions, especially young girls who now see proof that their dreams are valid and achievable. You have inspired me, too.

“Honestly, I didn’t want to watch the match. But I was still watching with the spirit of resilience, determination, and courage. And it’s great for a nation to have assets that are the hope of today, tomorrow, and the day after. You represent that hope.”

The Super Falcons etched their names further into history on with an incredible comeback performance. Trailing 0-2 at halftime against host, Morocco, the Nigerian women displayed resilience and determination, to mount a second half come back winning the final 3-2 in Rabat, and emerging 2024 WAFCON champions.

During the reception, Super Falcons’ captain Rasheedat Ajibade alongside vice-captain Chiamaka Nnadozie proudly presented the WAFCON trophy to President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.

Beyond the national honour, President Tinubu announced that each of the 24 players in the triumphant squad will receive $100,000 as a cash award as well as a 3-bedroom apartment. The 11-man Technical Committee of the Super Falcons also received a cash award of $50,000 each.
