CHAN 2024: Niger arrive in Uganda to cultural splendor as first team to land

Clad in their distinctive green and orange tracksuits, the Niger national team landed at Entebbe International Airport on Tuesday afternoon, becoming the first side to arrive in Uganda ahead of the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Their arrival was nothing short of spectacular. The West Africans were treated to a vibrant Ugandan cultural reception, complete with traditional music and dance performances that captivated players and officials alike. The welcome party was designed to showcase the rich heritage of the Pearl of Africa.

Grouped in the highly competitive Group C alongside hosts Uganda, South Africa, Algeria, and Guinea, Niger face a tough task in progressing beyond the group stage. However, their early arrival is a clear sign of serious intent and thorough preparation.

From Entebbe, the team was chauffeured to their accommodation base at Protea Hotel by Marriott Skyz in Naguru. But before departure, players and officials couldn’t hide their excitement at the sight of the iconic Silverback gorilla monument that stands at the arrivals terminal. Many whipped out their phones to capture photos of the sculpture and performers dressed in gorilla costumes — a moment that visibly delighted the visitors.

As the cultural dancers from the Crane Performers group put on a show, Niger’s delegation moved slowly from the terminal to their team bus, clearly soaking in every moment of the warm welcome.

Despite being ranked as the lowest-seeded team in Group C, Niger will be hoping to defy the odds when they kick off their campaign against Guinea on 4th August 2025 at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
