Gambian international Alieu Fadera moves to Sassuolo on loan

Gambia national team attacker Alieu Fadera will attempt to achieve more regular playing time in the 2025-26 season after confirmation of a loan move from Como to fellow Italian Serie A side Sassuolo.

The 23-year-old, who began his career at renowned Gambian club Real de Banjul, featured 28 times for Como last season but fell out of the starting lineup in early February. Fadera received a red card in the first half of Como’s 0-2 defeat at Bologna, causing head coach Cesc Fàbregas to only use him in a limted substitute role for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign.

Now with a new start and opportunity to prove himself, Fadera will look to show why he rose up the European ranks so rapidly. Fadera made his name in Slovakia with Pohronie after joining from Real de Banjul, where he scored 5 goals and provided 4 assists during the 2020-21 season before continuing his strong form in Belgium with Zulte Waregem and then KRC Genk.

A full Gambian international, Fadera is a regular fixture for the Scorpions with a combined ten appearances in Gambia’s qualifying campaigns for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He also played in all three of Gambia’s games at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, contributing an assist.

Sassuolo are in the midst of preseason preparations, giving Fadera time to integrate with the squad. They begin competitive play on August 15 with a Coppa Italia game against Serie B side Catanzaro.
