Ex-Kaizer Chiefs star Fredericks cites PSG as epitome of team-work

Former Kaizer Chiefs star Stanton Fredericks has cited Paris Saint Germain (PSG)’s success as a perfect example of why investing in teamwork is better than doing the same in star players.

The former Bafana Bafana star used the French Ligue 1’s example while addressing Botswana’s Mochudi Centre Chiefs FC’s players in his capacity as the FNB Premiership club’s president. PSG’s current squad comprises average players with a strong work ethic.

Fredericks, therefore, wants Centre Chiefs to adopt the same spirit as PSG. The former South African international recently signed a 15-year management contract with a sporting consortium which he leads. The consortium is called Stanton Fredericks Sports Group.

Centre Chiefs were in Bloemfontein, South Africa over the weekend to participate in a four-team tournament. The competition involved another Botswana side Jwaneng Galaxy, Betway Premiership outfits Orbit College FC and eventual winners Marumo Gallants.

Therefore, the former Amakhosi attacker urged Centre Chiefs players to make the most of the pre-season in South Africa by building team spirit.

“The most important thing is to use this time and preparation to become a team,” Fredericks said in a recorded video.

“We have seen PSG buying all the big players and winning nothing and we have seen them becoming a team and winning the UEFA Champions League.”

Fredericks was referring to PSG’s recent exploits that saw them winning their first ever Champions League trophy after beating Inter Milan in the final.

The French side had in the past failed to achieve such a feat despite signing star players such as Lionel Messi and Neymar Junior, hence the former South African international’s advice.

He added: “Let us become a team. Let us become a family. Take that moment to become a family and together we can succeed. Football careers are not long. The people you work with become a family.”

Centre Chiefs lost 2-1 to Orbit over the weekend to finish bottom of the four-team competition. Gallants beat the Betway Premiership rookies 1-0 in the final of the invitational tournament to win the championship.

Jaison scored the only goal of the game at Olympia Park Stadium to seal the victory.
