The South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) electoral committee has announced three candidates who passed the vetting process for the upcoming presidential election. The current incumbent, Augustino Maduot, successfully passed the vetting and is set to stand for re-election.
The winner will lead the SSFA for a two-year term. CECAFA president Maduot will face competition from Francis Michael and Kamal Akol.
A police officer from South Sudan, Maduot, has held the position since 2021 and hopes to secure a second term. He is credited with helping the country secure a renovated Juba Stadium and guiding the Under-20 national team to qualify for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations during his tenure.
The electoral committee disqualified Teng Deng from running for SSFA president after he failed the eligibility test. SSFA executive committee member and spokesperson Albino Deng had previously stated that Teng Deng should not be allowed to run. The SSFA quickly distanced itself from those remarks in an official statement. However, controversy may continue to grow following Teng Deng’s disqualification.
Two vice presidents and additional executive committee members will also be elected during the vote. The electoral committee stated that 38 delegates will participate in the voting process.
