Mohau Nkota’s emotional tribute to Pirates after Saudi move

Mohau Nkota, the promising young talent who recently departed Orlando Pirates for Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League, has issued a profound and heartfelt tribute to the club that shaped his burgeoning career. His moving farewell, posted on social media late Friday, comes three weeks after the Buccaneers confirmed his surprising move.

Nkota’s departure marks the close of a remarkable chapter. The 20-year-old’s impressive debut season with Pirates caught the attention of the Saudi club, leading to a swift agreement on personal terms and a successful medical.

In the 2024/25 season, Nkota played in 39 matches and contributed to 12 goals. His ascent began with a stellar showing for the club’s DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) side under the guidance of coach Joseph Makhanya, earning him a promotion to the first team at the season’s outset.

It was former Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro who handed Nkota his senior debut on October 19, 2024, in the Carling Knockout Cup clash against Magesi FC. Coming off the bench at halftime to replace Monnapule Saleng, the Kimberley-born attacker never looked back, quickly establishing himself as a regular and key player in the Bucs squad.

“Forever Grateful”: Nkota’s Touching Message

In his extensive Instagram post, Nkota poured out his gratitude to the individuals who were instrumental in his development both on and off the pitch. His message directly addressed pivotal figures, including former coach Riveiro, DDC coach Makhanya, and club chairman Irvin Khoza, alongside the entire “Bucs family.”

“As I close this chapter of my life, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude,” Nkota wrote. He specifically thanked coaches Mandla Qhogi and Mxolisi Mngomezulu for providing the opportunity to fulfil his dream and believing in him.

Nkota reserved special praise for Coach Joseph Makhanya, describing him as “more than just a coach — you’ve been a true father figure. Your guidance has shaped me not only as a player but as a man.”

He also singled out Coach Jose Riveiro, stating, “And to the man who made me the person I am today — coach Jose Riveiro — thank you. Your influence on my journey has been immeasurable, and I will carry your lessons with me wherever I go.”

Growth, Memories, and a New Chapter

Reflecting on his time at Orlando Pirates, Nkota conveyed mixed emotions: “There’s sadness in leaving behind the only football home I’ve ever known, but also excitement for the journey that lies ahead.”

He highlighted his significant personal and professional growth: “I’ve grown as a player, but even more importantly, I’ve grown as a person. I’m proud and honoured to have won my first major Cup [MTN8] with Orlando Pirates. The memories we’ve created and the friendships formed here will last a lifetime.”

Nkota also extended his appreciation to the passionate Orlando Pirates fans, acknowledging their “unwavering support. Your cheers, your chants, your passion, and even your constructive criticism — all of it fueled me every single step of the way. I’ll never forget the electric atmosphere you created on match days. It was a privilege to play for you.”

Concluding his heartfelt message, Nkota thanked the chairman, staff, technical team, and all players, past and present. “As I begin this new chapter, I do so with the values, lessons, and memories I’ve gained from this incredible club. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to wear the black and white and be part of the rich history of The Mighty Buccaneers. Thank you for an unforgettable time. Once & Always.”
