Morocco got off to a strong start at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), taming the Palancas Negras of Angola with a composed 2-0 victory on Sunday evening at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.
In a game that featured few clear opportunities, it was the North African side who were most efficient against a potentially dangerous opponent in COSAFA Cup champions Angola.
RS Berkane midfielder Imad Riahi struck first for Morocco in the 29th minute. An untidy clearance from the Angolan defense allowed the Atlas Lions to collect the ball and AS FAR Rabat captain Mohamed Hrimat, also serving as the Morocco captain at the CHAN, played a perfect through ball to find the fun of Riahi who made no mistake with his finish past Palancas Negras keeper Neblú.
After a poor first half, Angola increased their efforts but finding opportunities was difficult against a stubborn and well organized Moroccan defense. The Atlas Lions put the match away late when an 81st minute corner kick was headed by Angola defender Quinito into his own goal to confirm victory for the two-time CHAN winners.
Morocco next face co-hosts Kenya but will have a week-long break until the match on August 10. Angola also have the Harambee Stars as their next opponent with the duel set for Thursday at the Kasarani Stadium.
