Tanzania target is to win every CHAN game – Faisal Salum

After kicking off their TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 with a commanding 2-0 victory against Burkina Faso, Tanzania national team midfielder Faisal Salum has discussed what they want to achieve in remaining Group B matches.

Backed by a raucous home crowd at Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium, the Taifa Stars needed a composed first-half penalty from Abdul Sopu set the tone before defender Mohamed Hussein sealed the victory against the Stallions midway through the second half with a powerful header.

“This victory is the perfect start and makes all Tanzanians feel proud and happy,” Salum, whose commanding display earned him the TotalEnergies Man of the Match award, told CAFOnline.com.

“Our goal is to win every match, especially since the tournament is being held on our home ground. It is important that we prove ourselves and remain consistent in every game.”

He added: “This match is just the beginning. We’ve shown what we are capable of, but there’s still work to do. Every game will be a new challenge, and we must keep improving.”

On winning the Man of the Match award, he said: “It’s always an honour to be recognized. But it only matters because we won as a team. That’s the most important thing.”

He concluded: “We felt the fans behind us tonight. They give us energy, and we want to make them proud every time we play.”

Tanzania will next face Mauritania, who drew 0-0 against Magascar, on Wednesday.
