Laurențiu Reghecampf has been named the new coach of Sudanese champions Al Hilal. The Omdurman-based club was on the hunt for a new trainer following the departure of Florent Ibenge to Tanzanian side Azam.
Reghecampf, 49, is a former Romanian midfielder who has spent the last decade and a half coaching in his native country, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Tunisia.
He is not a new face in African football, having taken charge of Tunisian giants Espérance de Tunis in 2024 and winning the Super Cup. He also led the Saudi side Al Hilal Riyadh to the AFC Champions League final in 2014, though unsuccessfully.
Al Hilal unveiled Reghecampf as their new coach in a signing ceremony held in Port Sudan. The coach told the club’s media that he is happy to join the side. “I am happy to be here. I am happy to join the most popular club in Sudan. For me, it is a privilege and a big honour. I hope to bring a lot of trophies to the fans.”
Al Hilal Sport Sector head Muhammad Ibrahim Al-Aliqi asked fans to support the new coach. Al Hilal has been busy signing new players and renewing contracts. The club hopes to go further in the CAF Champions League in the 2025/26 season after reaching the quarter-finals last term.
