The 2025-2026 Nile Egyptian League round one continued with a thrilling encounter as Al Ahly were held to a 2-2 draw by Modern Sport at Cairo International stadium.
Al Ahly began the match with several high-profile new signings in their starting lineup, including Mahmoud Trezeguet, Ahmed Mostafa Zizo, Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane, Yassin Marei, and Mohamed Shokry. However, the Cairo giants struggled to create any real danger in the first half, failing to threaten Modern Sport’s goal.
The second half saw a noticeable improvement from Al Ahly, and they took the lead in the 50th minute when Ahmed Reda headed home from a corner delivered by Zizo.
Modern Sport responded quickly, leveling the score just eight minutes later through striker Hossam Hassan, who fired in a precise left-footed finish.
The surprise continued in the 74th minute when Ali El-Fil rose to head in from a Ali Fawzi corner, giving Modern Sport a shock 2-1 lead.
But Al Ahly fought back, and in the 79th minute, defender Yassin Merei nodded in from a Zizo free kick to rescue a point for the reigning champions.
Jose Reveiro, who played only the fourth official game as Al Ahly coach, will have to improve his team as the expectations are high from the team this season after the high-profile signings.
With this result, both teams collect their first point of the new Nile Egyptian League season.
