Uganda goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa has called on his teammates to forget the latest TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) victory against Niger and focus on the next assignments.
The Cranes climbed to the top of Group C with a controlled 2-0 victory over Niger at Nelson Mandela Stadium on Monday, securing back-to-back CHAN wins for the first time in their history and tightening their grip on a quarter-final place.
Allan Okello put the hosts in front midway through the first half — moments after seeing his penalty saved — before Joel Sserunjogi’s emphatic finish sealed the points. The result was achieved following Mutakubwa’s heroic saves that kept Niger at bay.
The BUL FC goalkeeper was the immovable force behind the win, handing himself the man of the match award. “We thank God for this moment. It’s a moment I’ve worked hard for and, most importantly, for the three points we’ve earned,” he said with visible pride after the match as quoted by CAFOnline.com.
“Following the loss to Algeria in the first game, we know that every match we face is like a cup final, and we’re going to treat the next one the same way.”
On coming up against South Africa in their next fixture, he said: “We know the threat South Africa poses, and we’re going back to regroup so we can handle that match.”
